Shippensburg University > ResNet > ResNet Wired Speed Calculations

ResNet Wired Network Access (also called ResNet Standard) is a "wired" network that allows access from residence hall rooms, Stone Ridge Commons, and Seavers suites.

The ResNet Standard network offers Fast Ethernet 100Mbps connections to each user port.  The network is built on a fiber/copper backbone that runs at 1Gbps (Gigabit Ethernet) to each set of switches in each residence hall.

From time to time, users ask if ResNet Standard is really 148 times faster than 56.6Kbps dial up.  The answer? Yes!  Here's how it works:

One megabyte of data equals 1,048,576 bytes of information.

Our 100Mbps Fast Ethernet network can transfer 1,250,000 bytes of information per second.
As a result, we can transfer that megabyte of data in 1 second or less!

A 56.6 Kbps connection can transmit up to 56,600 bits per second (7,075 bytes per second).
As a result, it takes 148.2 seconds to transfer a megabyte of data.

Hence, when operating at peak speeds, our 1 megabyte transfer times on ResNet Standard are 148 times faster than a modern dial-up modem!
