Configure Your Computer
Shippensburg University > ResNet > Get Connected > Configure Your Computer > Windows Vista > ResNet Standard Guide > Step 2

Step 2 - Ethernet Software

If your network card is already installed and configured properly, please continue on.

If you're not sure if your card is ready to go:

If your Ethernet card and computer are Plug & Play compatible, your computer should automatically detect the card when it is booted.  It may prompt you for a driver disk or the Windows installation CD.  If your card or computer does not support Plug & Play, you will have to install the needed driver yourself.

To install the software for a non-Plug & Play Ethernet card:

  • Click the Start Button (Flag Orb), click Settings, click Control Panel.
  • Click Add New Hardware, click Next.
  • Click Yes to have Windows search for new hardware, click Next, click Next.
  • Windows should now detect your Ethernet card and install it.  It may prompt for a driver disk if Windows does not have the default drivers.

If Windows still does not detect the Ethernet card then you will need to manually install it.

To manually install the software for an Ethernet card:

  • Click the Start button, click Settings, click Control Panel.
  • Click Add New Hardware, click Next.
  • Click NO to prevent Windows from searching for the Ethernet card, click Next, click Network Adapters.
  • You will now need to find your specific Ethernet card.  If your Ethernet card came with a driver disk, insert that disk and click Have Disk.  The driver that you need will most likely be on that disk.

You must have your Windows and/or Ethernet driver CD or disks to complete the installation.

Installing your Ethernet software driver

  • Once your Ethernet card is installed you will need to check to see that it is functioning properly.
    • On the desktop right click My Computer, then click Properties.
    • Click on Device Manager and double-click Network Adapter.
    • You should see your Ethernet card listed under Network Adapters.  If there is a yellow exclamation point next to your Ethernet card, the adapter and/or drivers have not been configured properly and will need to be reinstalled.
    • To reinstall the Ethernet drivers, double click your Ethernet Adapter, click on Driver, and click on Update Driver.  You will then be prompted for the location of the drivers and should insert the driver disk that came with your Ethernet card.

Next, you will need to configure your PC for DHCP.
