Configure Your Computer
Shippensburg University > ResNet > Get Connected > Configure Your Computer > Linux > ResNet Standard Guide > Step 4

Step 4 - Connect to your wall jack

You need to connect your Ethernet card to your ResNet Ethernet jack.
This requires use of a Cat 5 or Cat 6 "Ethernet Cable."

A phone cable is NOT an Ethernet cable, nor can it be used to connect to the ResNet network.
An Ethernet cable has a total of 8 wires (4 sets of twisted pairs).  These 8 wires are usually visible at the ends of the cable.
For reference, a Phone cable has 4 or 6 wires, and the male ends are smaller than the Ethernet version.

If you can't tell if you are using a phone cable or an Ethernet cable, use the following simple test:

An Ethernet cable will NOT fit into the jack on your telephone.  If the cable you plan to use on ResNet fits in your telephone's jack, it is NOT an Ethernet cable!

Once you're sure you have an Ethernet cable, just plug it into the network card on your computer and plug it into your Ethernet wall jack in your room.  If your NIC is properly installed and has status lights, the "Link" light will begin to glow or blink.

Once you're physically connected,  register for service!
