ResNet Network Card Requirements
Shippensburg University > ResNet > Get Connected > Requirements > Hardware Requirements > Network Cards

A network card is a piece of computer hardware that lets your computer "talk" on a computer network.

Shippensburg University offers both a wired and wireless Ethernet computer network.

What kind of Wired Network Card should you have?

All of our wired network connections offer speeds of 100 Mbps.
Most newer computers have network cards that support a speed of 100 Mbps or 1000 Mbps (called Gigabit, or 1 Gbps).

If your network card supports either of these speeds, it will work just fine!

If you have an older network card, it may only run at 10 Mbps.  It will still work on ResNet, but will operate at this reduced speed.

ResNet CANNOT assist you in the installation or purchase of a network card.

When connecting to our wired network, make sure you are using an Ethernet Patch Cord.  These cords are sometimes called Ethernet cords, Cat5 cables, Cat5e cables, and Ethernet cables.

A telephone cord will NOT work.

What kind of Wireless Network Card should you have?

If you wish to use our wireless network, make sure your computer has a wireless network card.  Most newer laptops have them built in.  If your laptop (or even your desktop) does not have one, you can install one.  ResNet CANNOT assist you in the installation or purchase of a wireless network card.

Ethernet wireless network cards operate on a standard called 802.11.  They also operate at varying speeds.  We currently support cards that work on the B or G standard.  All of our wireless access points broadcast at G speeds, but if you have a B card it will work just fine.

Supported Wireless Network Cards:

  • B  (11 Mbps maximum)
  • G  (54 Mbps maximum)
  • B/G (some cards are advertised as being a B/G card)

The actual speed of your connection will vary depending on what type of card you have, how close you are to one of our access points, and also varies based on a number of other geographic, architectural, and environmental factors.

What about a Modem?

Modems do not work on our wired or wireless Ethernet networks.  Modems are used to connect to telephone networks (common with dial-up Internet access).  If your computer has a modem in it, that is OK, but it must also have a wired or wireless network card to use our network services.
