All figures were taken from closing day of the Fall 2007 semester.

Q.  Which type of computer is right for incoming or returning students?

A.
For use on ResNet, nearly any new PC or laptop will do just fine.  The next step is to determine what the computer will be used for.  Most entry-level models will suite a user if the primary use is surfing the web, word processing, etc.  If the student is into media (i.e. digital photos, music, video), a computer with more hard drive space should be considered.  If the student is into gaming, you may need a computer with a faster processor, more RAM, and a high-quality video card.  Find the right balance of performance, features, and price for the type of computer that suits your needs and future plans!

Q.  What is all of this talk about Processor speed,  RAM size, and Hard drive space, etc?

A.  We've prepared a number of informative pages describing these common computer components!

Q.  Should I buy a Desktop or Laptop?

A.  We're seeing more and more students shifting to laptops.  Students often find laptops to be the more convenient option, and in many cases, laptops are welcome in the classroom for note taking and for working on projects.  Laptops can also be taken home more easily on long breaks and even on the weekends.  Desktops are still a viable option since they often offer better features and expandability at lower costs.

Q.  What about specific requirements?

A.  We do have minimum requirements for all computers connecting to ResNet.  Check out our hardware requirements and software requirements for complete details.  It is also very important to contact the department for your major to determine if there is any specific hardware or software you need for your field of study.

Q.  Should I buy a Mac or a PC?

A.  Much of this is left to personal preference.  Either will work on ResNet.  Check with the department for your major to determine if they have a preference or a requirement, as the software you use in your classes may only be compatible with certain types of computers.

Q.  Does Shippensburg University offer discounts on computer or software purchases?

A.  At this time, we do not have alliances with specific hardware or software vendors.  Many vendors do provide academic discounts for purchases made by actively enrolled students.  You may need to contact a given vendor's sales department by phone and/or provide proof of enrollment to qualify for these discounts.  Full-version, academic-priced software is available at the University Store!

Q.  Do I need a printer, scanner, or other similar items?

A.  These items are not required, but many students find having their own printer, scanner, or all-in-one very convenient.  Printing and scanning services are available to all Ship students.  Each computer lab offers access to one or more high-quality laser printers. Color prints and graphic/photography production services are also available through the Media Services department.

Q.  Do I really need my own computer?

A.  We strongly recommend it, but (unless required by your major) having your own computer is not an absolute requirement.  Shippensburg University offers four large microcomputer labs (one is open 24 hours a day), and many academic departments offer access to computer labs for student use.

Q.  Should I buy/upgrade to Windows Vista or use Windows XP?

A.  Either works with ResNet!  If you plan to buy a computer preloaded with Vista, or if you plan to upgrade from XP, check to ensure the hardware and software you use is compatible.  Many computers on campus and in our computer labs will have Vista installed for the Spring 2008 semester.
