ResNet Disc Drive Requirements
Shippensburg University > ResNet > Get Connected > Requirements > Hardware Requirements > Disc Drives

We strongly recommend having a CD or DVD drive.  ResNet provides software on CD to all students living on campus.  These CDs can be obtained at the ResNet Help Desk.  You can also download the software from our CD via our website).

What kind of drive should you have?

A CD-Rom drive as a bare minimum.  A DVD-RW drive gives you the most options.
Here's a listing of popular drive types, and what they can and cannot do:

CD-Rom Drive

  • You CAN read data and audio CDs
  • You CANNOT burn CDs
  • You CANNOT read DVDs
  • You CANNOT burn DVDs

CD-RW Drive

  • You CAN read data and audio CDs
  • You CAN burn CDs
  • You CANNOT read DVDs
  • You CANNOT burn DVDs

Many newer laptops come with a DVD-RW drive as standard equipment.  Check with your manufacturer when shopping to make sure.  Some desktops come with one or more disc drives.  It's common for one of these drives to be a CD-RW or DVD-RW drive, and for the other one to be a standard CD-Rom or DVD-Rom drive.  Having two drives allows you to copy files directly from one drive to the other.
